On Developing Positive Self Esteem

Why Positive Self Esteem Is Important

Are you always doubtful about your capabilities? Do you often hesitate to assert yourself believing that you don't deserve a better deal? Are you incapable of setting higher goals for yourself? All of these might well be the symptoms of low self esteem. If such is the case, then this is high time that you take a long and hard look at yourself in the mirror, and take concrete steps to develop positive self esteem.

Low self esteem creates lots of stress and tension in your life. Because you don't value yourself highly enough you are hesitant and unsure of yourself in taking even minor decisions. You always look at others for approval and guidance. Mentally, you are prepared to be treated as a door mat, because in your heart of hearts you believe that this is what you deserve! You try to please others for getting their approval. You are always criticizing your each and every action, and believe too easily in negative judgments passed on you.

Developing positive self esteem is your prime responsibility to yourself, as in its absence you are living a half life. Since you never know your own mind, all your decisions are influenced by those of others. Your actions don't arise out of convictions but out of a false sense of obligation to those around you. Slowly, you find yourself living a life which is false, lacks your truth and thus is devoid of all joy and happiness.

I will describe here a few steps that you can start taking in your life to enhance the feeling of self worth in your own eyes.

Awakening Positive Self Esteem

As a first step, start taking good care of your body. Eat food that is good for you. Do simple exercises at a convenient time. Else, start going on walks. Taking care of your body gives you a good feeling, improves your image in your mind and increases your self worth.

Treat yourself as a valuable person. Dress in good clothes, maintain cleanliness, and wear clothes that suit you. Make conscious effort to look good, without being over concerned about physical appearances.

Unfinished tasks add to the clutter, and thereby stress in your life, and lower your self image in your own eyes. Finish all such tasks that you have been postponing.

To nurture positive self esteem, choose a company that appreciates you and approves you as a person. Remain away from people who are critical.

Take away the focus from you. Try to get involved in the lives of those around you. Share their concerns and problems by becoming a good listener.

People with low self esteem have this habit of expecting the worst when beset with a problem. Develop the habit of positive visualization. Imagine yourself successfully surmounting the problem. Try to take a balanced view of the situation, and try to control and change your initial negative reactions.

Stop criticizing yourself. Shift the focus from what you are not and what you don't have to what you are and what you have. As individuals we are all imperfect: accept yourself along with your deficiencies. It doesn't mean that you stop improving yourself; it means that you are acceptable as you are but you will be even better with more efforts for self improvement. Learn the art of praising yourself whenever you do something good, and give yourself some incentive on successfully doing something you are proud of.

In life you are always growing and evolving. Low self esteem takes away most of the pleasure of living, and makes life a burden, full of stress and anxieties.

On the other hand, positive self esteem makes life worth living and future worth looking forward to.
